Springfield Ranks #2 Among Top Small U.S. Cities for Recent College Graduates

7/15/2026

The Springfield Sangamon Growth Alliance (SSGA) is celebrating Springfield being ranked as the #2 Best Small U.S. City for Starting a Career After College, according to CoworkingCafe’s 2026 “Best Cities for Recent Grads” series.

The annual ranking explores small, medium and large U.S. cities where first time job-seekers can find career growth in a supportive environment. It evaluates cities based on early career job opportunities, earnings, cost of living, access to employer sponsored health insurance, educational attainment, and lifestyle factors such as coworking spaces and entertainment options.

Climbing four places since 2025, Springfield stands out for its balance of accessible living costs and strong entry-level career pathways, making it an increasingly attractive alternative to bigger, more costly cities.

“This ranking reinforces what we see on the ground every day. Springfield is a great launchpad for young professionals seeking meaningful career opportunities paired with affordability and quality of life," said SSGA CEO Ryan McCrady. “This recognition reflects the strength of our businesses and employers, the affordability of our region, and the growing number of opportunities that support early career talent.”

Springfield ranks among the top cities for entry-level job availability, with approximately 8% of local jobs classified as graduate-level roles, one of the highest across the 30 cities analyzed. Additionally, Springfield saw a strong increase in educational attainment, with the share of residents holding a college degree rising to 37%, signaling a positive trend in the region’s growing and increasingly skilled workforce.

McCrady also points to ongoing efforts in economic development, downtown revitalization, and workforce initiatives as key drivers of the city’s upward trajectory.

“Springfield’s momentum reflects a community working together toward long-term growth,” said McCrady. “Whether graduates are entering tech, healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, professional services, or something else, Springfield has something for everyone and offers real opportunity without the financial barriers found in many larger cities. That combination is increasingly resonating with the next generation of talent.”
